Open Assistant is a new project aiming to replicate the functionality of chat GPT as an open-source solution. Spearheaded by LAION, a collaborative organisation focused on advancing AI research, and a global community of interested individuals, the project seeks to bring advanced AI language technology to everyone.
The Open Assistant project is still in its infancy, but the team is hard at work, building upon established research in applying Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) to large language models. This approach will allow the developers to create an AI assistant that understands and responds to natural language inquiries, much like Chat-GPT.
Open Assistant’s code and models will be licensed under the Apache 2.0 license, making it available for free use and modification. Furthermore, the project’s training data will be released under the CC BY 4.0 license, ensuring transparency and fostering collaboration.
How You Can Help
To achieve a minimum viable prototype, the project requires 30,000 samples for each demonstration and between 50,000 to 100,000 demonstrations. You can contribute by logging onto the project’s website to label prompter replies, rate them as low or high quality, and report any inappropriate content.
By volunteering your time or expertise, you can help make this project a reality and enable more people to benefit from AI-powered language understanding.
